The Y1 children really enjoyed their cooking experience in the kitchen. They all made delicious rice crispy cakes to take home. This experience enhanced the children’s learning in science as they had been learning about materials and how they can be changed, and this was clearly demonstrated to them in the melting of the chocolate when it was heated. The children were also able to practise some mathematical skills such as measuring and counting. They also used some literacy skills including reading the recipe, and describing the actions of what they were doing and what was happening, such as mixing, pouring, melting. And finally they had to use social skills such as turn taking, helping each other put aprons on and sharing.
