All about deserts
This term in topic we are exploring deserts through interactive research and discussions. The children were shown a video clip of what a typical desert looks like. Following this, they were asked to sort images into deserts and non-deserts. They were surprised to find out that ALL of the images were of deserts. Did you know that a desert is any large region that gets very little rain each year and very few plants or animals live in desert areas? The discovery that some cold deserts were mountainous and even had ice was mind blowing to the children! Later in the week, the children labelled a world map to highlight the largest deserts in the world. After plotting the deserts on a map, they also labelled what country and continent they are in. We wouldn’t be surprised if they wanted to go visit a real desert by the end of this unit.
