This week in Nursery, the children have been learning all about the traditional celebrations that take place during the Chinese New Year. They heard the story of how the order of the years were named after the winners in an animal race and some children participated in their own ‘animal masked’ race. The home corner was transformed into a Chinese restaurant and children were able to cook and serve noodles, dumplings and spring rolls to their friends. Some even ate with their chopsticks! Other children made fortune cookies and practised writing ‘lucky numbers’ and messages to insert into the cookies. We also had a go at writing Chinese symbols and learnt that the Chinese write from top to bottom, not left to right. Finally, we celebrated dancing the dragon dance accompanied by our own musicians playing drums and tambourines.
