James Mayhew is the author of the ‘Katie’ series. He has written and illustrated many stories, including all the Katie series, Mouse and Mole series, Ella Bella Ballerina series and Gaspard the Fox series. From a young age, James knew he wanted to be an artist. Art was always his favourite subject at school and he loved reading! This inspired him to become an author and illustrator of much-loved children’s books. His inspiration for the ‘Katie’ series comes from his adventures with his sister Katie when he was just a boy.
On 18th November 2020, James Mayhew, the author of our Big Reading Book, Katie in London, visited us! Some of the children were so inspired that they have decided that they want to be writers too! James talked to us about what we would need to do to become writers when we are older. He talked to us about how he became a writer and illustrator. He read us a story about a dragon and a princess and did a live illustration to go with it. We asked him many questions about himself, his work and his books.
About the visit - the children said:
Alicja: “I liked that he was nice and that he drew us a story.“
Fariha: “My favourite part was when we asked him questions about Katie in London.”
Maria: “I learnt that Katie is actually James Mayhew’s sister!”
Arham: “I liked that he showed me how to draw a castle and dragon.”
About the book - the children said:
Awaab: “My favourite part was at the end because the lion turned back into a statue but he had a green woolly to keep his tummy warm.”
Rahaf: “I liked it when the lion went on the London Eye because he was scared but then he liked the view.”
Faryal: “The best part was when they went to the Tower of London because they saw the sparkly jewels.”
Minsa: “I loved Katie in London because they saw all the landmarks we have learnt about.”
