This week, Year 5 were exploring the topic of 'Earthquakes'. To help us with our writing we carried out a demonstration which simulated what happens during an earthquake. We used equipment such as plastic trays, soil and strips of fabric. The strips of fabric represented how the tectonic plates move underneath the Earth's crust (the soil). We noticed that a ‘fault line’ was shown and the effect on the Earth’s crust was similar to a real earthquake. When we added cubes to represent buildings, we noticed that taller buildings fell more quickly than shorter buildings. Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed this demonstration and will be able to use what they have learnt in their writing.
